The Great Commission: Christ's Command to Every Believer

Main Scripture:
Matthew 28:19-20 (KJV)

"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you..."

Introduction

Before Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, He gave His disciples a final command. This command is known as the Great Commission. It was not given only to the apostles but to all believers who would follow Christ throughout history.

The Great Commission is the mission of the Church and the responsibility of every Christian.

Background

After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples and confirmed that all authority in heaven and on earth had been given to Him. He then instructed them to go into the world and make disciples of all nations.

This command became the foundation of Christian evangelism and missionary work.

Teaching Points

  1. We Are Commanded to Go

Jesus did not tell believers to remain inactive. He commanded them to go and share the Gospel with others.

Every believer has a responsibility to be a witness for Christ in daily life, family, community, and beyond.

  1. We Are Called to Make Disciples

The mission is not only to win converts but to make disciples who follow Christ faithfully.

Discipleship includes teaching, mentoring, and helping others grow in spiritual maturity.

  1. Baptism Is Part of Obedience

Jesus instructed that new believers should be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Baptism is a public declaration of faith and obedience to Christ.

  1. Teaching Must Continue

The Great Commission includes teaching believers to obey all that Christ commanded.

Christian growth requires continual learning of God's Word and faithful application of biblical truth.

Lessons for Today

  • Every Christian has a mission.

  • The Gospel is for all nations.

  • Discipleship is essential for spiritual growth.

  • The Church must remain committed to evangelism.

  • Christ is with His people as they carry out His work.

Conclusion

The Great Commission remains God's mission for the Church today. Jesus calls every believer to participate in spreading the Gospel and making disciples. As we obey His command, we can be confident that He is with us always, even unto the end of the world.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of serving in Your Kingdom. Help us to obey the Great Commission faithfully. Give us courage to share the Gospel, wisdom to disciple others, and strength to remain faithful to Your calling. In Jesus' name, Amen.
